[...] Toiling steadfastly in the rock 'n' roll
trenches for years, Austin's own Fastball caps a remarkable year
after finally discovering the way to stardom with their enticing
brand of hook-heavy power-pop. Before teaming up, guitarist/vocalist
Miles Zuniga, bassist/vocalist Tony Scalzo, and drummer Joey Shuffield
toiled a couple decades combined in bands such as Big Car, the Wild
Seeds, and the Beaver Nelson Band, paying dues in the equivalent
of rock 'n' roll's minor leagues. Joining forces as Magneto USA,
they held down day jobs while honing their chops and audience-testing
the material of songwriters Zuniga and Scalzo by gigging at the
Electric Lounge, Flamingo Cantina, and at Austin's famed music incubator
the Hole in the Wall. By the time record companies came courting,
